Chapter 9 – The Things We Don’t Know We Said

I run outside to the car and hold the door while Brand climbs out. His beating from the guards has left him sore. He grabs onto my arm for support. I guess I expected him to be a little more excited to see me. Instead, he says, “Why do I lose my powers with you, Calli?”

“I have some of the black obsidian on my body . . . remember, from the pocket watch?”

Chris comes to my side to take over helping Brand walk. Chris says, “You sure took a beating, didn’t you?”

Brand turns his head to me and asks, “Think you could use some of your healing power on me? I could really use some about now.”

“Sorry, Brand. I’m trying to stay invisible to Freedom.”

Brand curses as Chris helps him up the stairs.

Deus Ex is out of the car and already inside, handing over the documents and the loaded flash drive she stole. I hear her say as we walk through the doorway, “This is bad, Maetha. I won’t allow this to happen.”

“Deus,” Maetha says, “I’ll have to look over the documents before I’ll even know what you’re talking about.”

“I already looked them over as I downloaded them. The project they’re working on puts us all in danger. You thought the obsidian was bad. The vest they’re making is going to kill us all. That’s the goal. Eliminate all people with powers!”

Maetha looks beyond Deus and says, “We don’t have time to deal with this right now. Our location will be discovered very soon. Take only what’s necessary. Everyone leave! Now! Calli, Chris, and Brand will travel together. Calli, keep the small stone open. Brand, repeat when necessary. It may be touch and go for a little while. Again, Brand, repeat as necessary. Chris, take care of her.”

“Where are you going, Maetha?” I ask.

Deus Ex cuts in with a confused look on her face. “How do you know we’re about to be discovered?”

Maetha answers me first. “Somewhere safe, but don’t worry. I’ve asked several Bearers to monitor you.” Before I can question, she turns to Deus Ex. I think Maetha’s going to admit she can see the future, but instead she points to the video screens and says, “Look.”

Amenemhet’s voice booms, “Out. Everybody out!”

I take one last look at Maetha, who tosses me a small plastic bag of Pulse Emitters, before I hustle out the door with Chris and Brand. Chris helps Brand get into the back seat of one of the vehicles we arrived in, while I jump into the passenger side in front. Chris climbs in behind the wheel and rips out of the driveway.

“Calli,” —Chris points to the GPS device— “turn that on and find out where we are.”

I do as he says and wait for the screen to show the map.

Brand says, “Calli, there’s a fork in the road two minutes ahead. I think we’ll be turning left.”

I scroll with my finger, knowing he repeated to give me that information.
